SM is a lot tighter, and yet loaded with fun stuff like missile tanks that rewards your exploration instead of it just being a stack of currency you have to smack a few times and then might lose anyway. Leads to a lot of doubling back around wasting time.ĭying and leaving your souls behind also encourages you to repeat your last path instead of exploring a new one, which is just a drag and inflates the hour count when you're really just running back and forth doing the same shit over and over. I also didn't really feel like I'm exploring, since it felt like 3 out of 4 paths would just lead to a one-way door with a switch on the other side and I had to critical path it to open them as shortcuts, instead of it being truly organic and open ended. Green and black instead of blue and black, whee.
Even the different areas look pretty similar, at least 7 or so hours in before I stopped playing. The problem is that all the rooms just look the same and it's a big dense knot of purposeless hallways.

I haven't really used a guide to know what exists, but is there any character or thing that lets you know what you need in order to progress? The game is surprisingly more vague than the Soulsborne series when it comes to progression.
I had previously made a post about how close Hollow Knight had captured the feel of the Soulsborne series, but I'm wondering if some components could have adjusted the late game lulls of being lost and unable to progress in the area you know you need to go. The Fungal Wastes are pretty much directly in the middle of Hallownest, so it has several entrances from several areas, but the easiest way to reach him is by falling in from the Forgotten Crossroads. I unknowingly found something else that further opens up the map, which lead me to another thing that opened up everything else that was blocking my path. 60 Geo Fungal Wastes Cornifer is fairly deep in the Fungal Wastes, but it doesn't take too long to reach him if you keep moving. I had found myself losing steam for about 5 hours as I aimlessly wandered around hoping to find something in the various far reaches of the map. At the very top, take the entrance on the left. I'm almost 40 hours into Hollow Knight and every time I feel that I know where the game is going I suddenly discover an entire new area or I find out that a small area I had previously visited is actually 2 times larger than I thought. Once you’re at the bottom of Fog Canyon, start making your way up.
